Prehistoric Farm Shovel: How to Get It and Dig Fossils
The Prehistoric Farm shovel is a starting tool: hold it on a dig site and release in the green. Learn the verified route to better shovels at spawn, Bronze at 2,500 coins, and what each dig can return.
You do not have to earn or craft the shovel in Prehistoric Farm — you start with one. The game's official How To Play makes it step one: "Grab your shovel and hold down on a dig site. Let go when the meter is in the green for a better find!" Better shovels, which open more islands to digging, are bought with coins from the shovel seller back at the spawn area — the first upgrade, the Bronze shovel, costs 2,500 coins and opens up Devonian Island. This page covers how the shovel works, how to buy the upgrades, and what a dig can actually return.
Getting the shovel
Every new player already holds one. The How To Play addresses the shovel as "your shovel" before any purchase or unlock is ever mentioned, and a first-session playthrough shows the player digging up Cambrian fossils right away. No shop step, quest, or claim object is shown for this first shovel — money only enters the shovel's story later, when you upgrade it.
So as a beginner, your only preparation is knowing where to dig: walk up to a dig site on Cambrian Island and hold to start digging. For the wider loop that those fossils feed into — full sets, Dr. Ivy, and dinosaur eggs — see Prehistoric Farm fossils.
How digging works
Every dig is the same timing minigame:
- Walk up to a dig site on the island you are on.
- Hold down on the site with your shovel.
- Watch the meter and let go while it is in the green — the game's exact words are "Let go when the meter is in the green for a better find!"
Release timing in the green is the only input the game documents for improving a find. What "a better find" concretely changes — rarity, size, or quality — is not spelled out anywhere in the game's own instructions, so treat green releases as the one part of a dig you can practice.
What a single dig returns varies:
- A fossil. Good digs add to the current island's fossil set — the first-session player was collecting a Cambrian set that needed six fossils for DNA. Some finds are flagged as "perfect."
- Nothing. Misses are normal. The observed first session repeatedly returned "no fossil" results between good finds.
- Cash or buried treasure. Some digs pay out coins or surface "buried treasure" instead of a fossil. Digging is therefore also an earning activity, not just a collecting one.
- A night prompt. After dark the game says "Find a glowing dig site." The prompt is documented, but no special behavior or reward for glowing sites is — do not go in expecting a bonus.
Buying a better shovel
The starting shovel only works in one place. When the first-session player sailed to Jurassic Island, its fossils refused to budge: "Oh, I need a better shovel ... I can't dig up any of this." The fix the game points to is a purchase back at spawn. The verified route:
- Confirm you have hit the limit. Probe a fossil on a higher island; if the game responds that you need a better shovel, that island is out of reach for now.
- Sail back to the spawn area. The player got in their boat and navigated back by a landmark ("I do remember that waterfall right there"). If you are still choosing a boat, see Prehistoric Farm boats.
- Open the shovel seller's menu at spawn. The seller stands somewhere in the spawn area — its exact spot is not documented — and opening the menu shows the shovel tiers, including a Silver shovel.
- Earn coins until you can afford a tier. Digging pays coins and so does fishing; the observed session climbed from 244 to 2,900 coins through a stretch of digging and fishing.
- Buy the Bronze shovel for 2,500 coins. The purchase completes on screen: "Okay, now the bronze shovel. Nice."
- Keep climbing. The shovel above Bronze is priced at 12,000 coins.
Shovel tiers: verified prices and effects
| Shovel | Cost | Verified effect |
|---|---|---|
| Starting shovel | You begin with it | Digs the Cambrian area only |
| Bronze | 2,500 coins | Digs Devonian Island |
| Next shovel | 12,000 coins | Next step up; further unlocks not shown |
A Silver shovel also appears in the seller's menu, but its price and place in the ladder were not shown, so do not assume where it sits between Bronze and the 12,000-coin shovel.
The one verified effect of an upgrade is where you can dig. Before Bronze: "right now I can only dig in the Cambrian area." Immediately after buying it, the same player sailed to Devonian Island and started digging there. Whether higher tiers also change dig speed, odds, or payouts is not shown — the documented benefit is access to new dig grounds, so buy for the islands, not for better odds. For where those islands are, see Prehistoric Farm fossil islands.
Common digging mistakes
- Chasing high-period fossils too early. With the starting shovel, Jurassic Island fossils return "I need a better shovel" and stay in the ground. The fix is a purchase at spawn, not a different digging technique.
- Ignoring the meter. The green-zone release is the only documented way to improve a find, so it is the one skill worth practicing while you grind.
- Expecting a fossil every dig. Misses, cash, and buried treasure all occur in normal digging; plan around variance rather than a fixed drop rate.
- Budgeting for the wrong number. Bronze is 2,500 coins and the next shovel is 12,000 — with Silver's price unshown, those are the only two numbers worth planning around.
- Reading rewards into the night prompt. "Find a glowing dig site" is real, but no special reward for glowing sites is documented.
Where to dig next
Once the Bronze shovel is yours, Devonian Island is the immediate destination, and the same purchase-repeat cycle continues up the ladder. For picking targets and planning trips, use Prehistoric Farm dig sites, and for timing your releases and digging sessions, see Prehistoric Farm digging timing.
