Prehistoric Farm Fossil Islands: Verified Islands and How to Reach Them

The fossil islands verified in Prehistoric Farm, the starter-boat routes that reach them, the shovel tiers that gate digging, and what stays unconfirmed.

Fossil islands in Prehistoric Farm are the dig destinations you sail to from the home island, and each one holds the fossil set of a geological period. Four island names check out against narrated gameplay: Cambrian Island, Jurassic Island, Devonian Island and Triassic Island. The starter boat demonstrably reaches the first three — the early wall is not the boat, it is your shovel. The starter shovel only digs on Cambrian; the 2,500-coin bronze shovel is what lets you dig on the next verified island.

The verified fossil islands

Devonian IslandNamed, landed on, and dug atStarter boat, after buying the bronze shovelBronze shovel digs here

Two cautions on names: except "Cambrian Island," these names were heard in narration rather than read off labels, so in-game spellings may differ slightly. The in-game period list also shows Cretaceous and Cretaceous seas, but neither is ever visited in the available gameplay — treat them as names on the fossil list, not confirmed destinations.

How island access works

All island travel starts at the boat launch on the home island. In the narrated session, every route used the first, unupgraded boat:

  1. Spawn to the Cambrian dig area: it took "less than a minute."
  2. Later, the same boat sailed "in the way of Triacic Island" — Triassic — and stopped at Jurassic Island.
  3. After buying the bronze shovel, with the boat still unupgraded, the same boat reached Devonian Island, where the player landed and dug.

The official description states the broader rule — "Buy bigger boats and sail to new fossil islands" — and a guide summary reads the same way: larger boats open access to other fossil islands. What no source does is map a boat tier to a named island. In the session footage, no visited island demanded anything but the starter boat, while the shovel blocked progress twice. So when deciding what to buy: the confirmed gate is shovel tiers, the starter boat is "extremely slow" (a comfort problem, not a locked door), and the next boat costs 4,000 coins — the player had only 3,600 after the Devonian trip — with what it unlocks never shown. Whether bigger boats are strictly required for any current island, or mainly add speed and range, is not settled by the available footage.

Practical notes for the sail itself: if you lose track of your boat, you can launch again from spawn — the player did exactly that mid-session — and landmarks help; the way home was found by remembering the waterfall. Watch where you disembark: stepping off at Devonian dropped the player into deep water ("And I'm already about to drown") until they jumped out.

If you have no boat ready at all, the Codes page has listed a code granting an aquatic dinosaur to replace your boat — a one-time pickup that puts you on the water without the usual wait. It is not a progression route and has not been shown to stand in for boats on every island.

The gate that matters: shovel tiers

  • Starter shovel — digs only the Cambrian area: "right now I can only dig in the Cambrian area, I guess."
  • Bronze shovel — 2,500 coins, bought back at spawn. The player's takeaway: "it seems like you need better shovels. Start digging in different parts."
  • Next shovel after bronze — 12,000 coins, which is beyond anything the session demonstrated.

Check your shovel before you sail. The player reached Jurassic Island with the starter shovel, could not dig anything, and had to boat all the way back to spawn for the 2,500-coin upgrade. The shovel guide covers the tiers in detail.

What to do on each island

Cambrian Island is the opening dig area. The period menu tracks a six-fossil set here — mid-session the player stood at three of six, with finds like a Hallucenia and an Opabinia (names as heard in narration) plus the common trilobite fossils. Digs can miss ("No fossil") or turn up coins and buried treasure, and spares sell for small change. When night falls in-game, dig spots glow, which is how the player found the next one.

Jurassic Island is sauropod country as far as the session shows: the player browsed dig spots hoping for a "Platoaurus" and spotted small theropods, but with the starter shovel every attempt failed.

Devonian Island is, in the player's words, "basically the Deonian period. Just a bunch of Deonian period fossils there" — meaning the Devonian set. It is the first island shown dug with the bronze shovel, and remember the deep-water landing noted above.

Triassic Island was only named while sailing toward Jurassic; nothing about landing or digging there is demonstrated.

Every island feeds the same loop: collect a full period set, bring it to Dr. Ivy's DNA lab on the home island, incubate the egg, raise the dino — and once it is grown, ride it around the islands. The fossil sets and dig sites guides pick up from there.

The progression order the evidence supports

  1. Sail to Cambrian Island with the starter boat and starter shovel; dig its set and bank coins.
  2. At 2,500 coins, buy the bronze shovel at spawn.
  3. Take the same starter boat to Devonian Island and dig there.
  4. From Devonian onward, save for the 12,000-coin shovel and/or the 4,000-coin boat — what either unlocks is not documented.

This is the order one recorded session demonstrated, not an official track, so island names, access and activities are worth rechecking after map expansions.

Beyond the verified islands

Officially, more fossil islands exist behind bigger boats, but no available source names them. Sunken Grotto's sea reptile eggs, open-sea fishing and diving, and the Mosasaurus fight are all listed as sea content without being tied to a named island — whether they are separate islands or underwater areas is not shown. Those have their own pages: Sunken Grotto, the open sea and the Mosasaurus.

Pick your next step by the problem you have: if the bottleneck is the boat — speed, price, what upgrades unlock — see the boats guide; if it is digging — timing the meter and reading dig spots — the dig sites guide is the place to go.
