Prehistoric Farm How to Play: The Core Loop From Your First Dig to Your First Ride

How to play Prehistoric Farm, step by step: dig fossils with green-meter timing, trade a full set at Dr. Ivy's DNA Lab, hatch and raise your dino, plus the shovel and boat unlocks that open new islands.

Prehistoric Farm runs on one core loop, and everything else hangs off it: dig up fossils, trade a complete set for an egg at Dr. Ivy's DNA Lab, hatch it, raise the dino on your ranch until it's grown, then ride it around the islands. That order comes straight from the developer's How To Play list, and a recorded first session plays it out in exactly that sequence.

The loop at a glance:

  1. Dig — grab your shovel, hold down on a dig site, and let go when the meter is in the green for a better find.
  2. Collect a full fossil set for one prehistoric animal.
  3. Trade the set for an egg — carry it to Dr. Ivy at the DNA Lab and choose the fossil-for-egg exchange.
  4. Incubate and hatch — warm the egg in the incubator, collect it at the hatchery, and place the hatchling on your ranch.
  5. Feed to grow — keep your dino's belly over half full so it keeps growing from Newborn toward Elder.
  6. Ride — once it's grown, hop on and ride your partner dino around the islands.

How the core loop works

Each stage feeds the next. Digging produces fossils and coins, fossils become eggs, eggs become dinos, and grown dinos become your ride and your ranch's centerpiece. Coins from digging (and occasional buried treasure) buy the food that keeps your dinos growing, plus the shovel and boat upgrades that unlock more of the map.

Two upgrade tracks run alongside the loop and gate how far you can go: shovel tiers decide which dig islands you can work, and boat tiers decide which fossil islands you can reach. Neither blocks the loop itself — you can dig, hatch, and raise indefinitely in the starting area — but both are how you reach new fossils and the sea activities.

First fossil excavation

Your first dig session looks like this:

  1. Take the boat from the spawn area to a dig island — in one recorded first session, the trip took under a minute.
  2. Find a dig spot, hold down to dig, and release when the meter is in the green for a better find.
  3. Check your fossil panel for the island's period. The starting Cambrian set is six fossils; the recorded session tracked it as "three out of six — we need three more for DNA."
  4. When the set is complete, the panel shows Ready to extract DNA. You can't extract it at the dig site — carry the set to the fossil station first.

One expectation to set early: fossil finds are chance-based. The recorded session had many digs return nothing before a fossil appeared, so an empty dig is normal, not a bug. While you wait out the dry streak, nighttime digs glow and occasionally surface buried treasure alongside fossils.

For the dig mechanic's timing, the island lineup, and shovel tiers, see the guides on dig sites, digging timing, and the shovel.

From fossils to eggs

A complete set becomes an egg in three moves:

  1. Return to the home island with a complete set. The available sources do not establish a separate extraction action before the trade.
  2. Trade with Dr. Ivy at the DNA Lab ("I bring fossils back to life. Got any samples for me?") — the trade turns your set into an egg.
  3. Incubate the egg on its timer, then collect it at the hatchery, watch it hatch, and place the hatchling on your ranch.

Incubation runs on a short timer — the recorded session saw roughly five minutes for a first egg and 2:30 for a later one, so expect a few minutes rather than a fixed number.

That wait is the natural slot for fishing. It costs bait, and catches include mackerel, puffer fish, sardine, and swordfish. Fish sell for only small amounts (about 5–10 coins each in the recorded session), and the narrator kept his catches after hearing they could be used as food. Feeding caught fish is not demonstrated, so treat that use as unconfirmed.

More detail on set requirements and the egg pipeline is in the guides to fossil sets, Dr. Ivy, dinosaur eggs, and the incubator.

Raising and riding dinosaurs

Once the hatchling is on your ranch, the loop's rule is simple: a dino only keeps growing if its belly stays over half full. Buy food, feed it, and it grows from a tiny Newborn toward a huge Elder; per the developer, a dino whose belly drops stops growing until you feed it again. Once it's grown, you can hop on and ride it around the islands — your partner dino becomes transport.

Two things the evidence doesn't pin down: how long Newborn-to-Elder growth takes, and whether any player level is required to ride. The recorded session ends during early feeding, so plan around the feeding habit — keep food stocked and top the belly up whenever it dips — rather than a timeline.

The economy matters here too: food costs more once you raise more than one Elder, and a 2x Luck Potion lasts 30 minutes, a solid window for a fossil run. The full feeding routine is covered in dinosaur raising, growth stages in dinosaur growth, and mounting up in dinosaur riding.

Shovel, boat, and coin milestones

A recorded first session shows how the unlock chain works in practice:

MilestoneWhat it unlocks
Bronze shovel (2,500 coins, observed)Digging beyond the starting Cambrian area — the player went straight to Devonian Island after buying it
Next shovel (12,000 coins, observed)The following dig tier, the session's next saving goal
Bigger boats (next boat observed at 4,000 coins)Advertised access to new fossil islands; no specific tier requirement is confirmed for the other sea activities

Treat those prices as orientation from one playthrough, not fixed values — updates can move them. The pattern is what matters: your current shovel tells you which islands you can dig, and your current boat tells you which islands you can reach. While you're saving, free codes are an easy boost to the coin stack.

Where exploration fits

Once boats enter the picture, the official Explore layer opens up around the core loop:

There's also a shortcut: per GameRant, an aquatic dinosaur can stand in for a boat on sea trips, putting you on the water without waiting on the next boat purchase.
